HANDCRAFTED
LOG CONSTRUCTION
Log Knowledge uses a traditional stacked log wall style of architecture
for log shells; every log runs the full wall length of the home with
no butt-joint splices. At the corners of the shell, each log is hand
scribed and notched in order to fit over the log below it, creating
an interlocking saddle notch corner. Log columns can also be substituted
for saddle-notch corners. Two
distinct log profiles are available for log shell construction:
chinked style and full-scribe (Swedish cope/chinkless). A chinked
style log profile leaves a three-quarter inch gap between the logs
during construction, and is later filled with backer rod insulation
and synthetic chinking which allows for movement of the logs and
provides a maintenance-free weather seal.
In
a full-scribe (Swedish cope/chinkless) log profile, each log is
hand- scribed
and coped along the length of the log in order to fit onto the specific
log below it. Since logs will ‘breathe’ independently
with the moisture fluctuations in the air on an ongoing basis, this
wood-on-wood system has a synthetic sealant bead along each side
of the cope.
POST & BEAM AND TIMBER FRAME CONSTRUCTION
Log Knowledge provides alternative ways to incorporate logs into
any style of construction. Post & beam construction is an exciting
and dramatic design choice that is created by using a log frame
system combined with conventional styles of construction.
The
architectural design possibilities of post & beam and timber
frame construction are truly endless. Stone and various types of
wood can be incorporated into a post & beam frame to produce
a rustic appearance. Integrating glass, drywall, or stucco can also
create a more modern look.
Timber
frame construction offers the same type of frame system as post
& beam construction, but utilizes square and rectangular timbers
in place of round logs, adding an especially unique appearance to
the structure.
